J&K: One terrorist killed in encounter in Kupwara; combing operation continues
Fresh firing took place in Kupwara a day after a Lieutenant Colonel was seriously injured in a gun battle with the terrorists.

Srinagar: One terrorist was gunned down while three army jawans were injured in an encounter with militants in Kupwara in Jammu & Kashmir on Monday.

A brief exchange of firing took place between the two sides and soon additional teams of security forces were rushed to the area to prevent other terrorists from escaping. During the operation, the jawans managed to kill one of the terrorists and rest are suspected to be hiding in a nearby jungle area.

The incident took place a day after a Lieutenant Colonel was seriously injured in a gun battle with the terrorists. On Sunday, a Lieutenant-Colonel of 160 Territorial Army was severely injured during a combing operation with terrorists at Handwara area.

Since last Saturday, based on sources information about the suspicious movement of terrorists, the army has launched a search operation against them in Bhawan village in Handwara.

On November 17, an Army Colonel has been killed in an encounter in the same Kupwara district. The Commanding Officer of 41 Rashtriya Rifles Colonel Santosh, who was leading a search party, was critically injured when terrorists hiding in a dense forest area of Haji Naka opened fire. The incident took place near the Line of Control in Kashmir.

Santosh, who was from the elite regiment of Para Commandos, was evacuated to a hospital but unfortunately he succumbed to injuries.
