THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Transport Minister V S Siva Kumar  announced that enforcement of traffic rules would be strengthened and the government is deliberating on posting more officials for the  purpose. He was replying to a submission by K S Saleekha MLA in the Assembly.Sivakumar informed that 17 enforcement squads had been formed to make sure that Motor Vehicle Laws were strictly followed. Stage carriage and speed governors had been made mandatory for heavy vehicles, tipper lorries and school vehicles. Strict actions are being taken against over speeding vehicles using speed tracers and mobile enforcement squads. Awareness programmes are being conducted to educate and make the public vigilant about road security. Kerala is the only state in the country which had been implementing ‘Decade of Action for Road Safety’ programme, which was initiated by United Nations.The high-level meeting convened by the Chief Minister had decided to promulgate a new action plan to curb road accidents. The government decided to constitute State Accidents Review committee with the Road Security Commissioner as chairman and Traffic IG, PWD-NH-Roads chief engineers as members. “This committee would look into all serious  road accidents and take measures so that such mishaps would not occur again,” the minister said.
