New Delhi: The National Capital Region is facing an acute coal shortage and is likely to run out of coal if the demand for power in Delhi continues to peak further, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said in a letter to PM Narendra Modi.
Kejriwal, in his letter, told the Prime Minister that the high demand for power was due to the ongoing heatwave-like condition in Delhi. The amount of coal available in NCR, he said, was not even sufficient for one full day’s power generation.
“Respected Shri Narendra Modi Ji, This is to bring to your kind notice that thermal generating stations in NCR i.e Dadri I & II, Jhajjar and Badarpur are facing acute coal shortage since last many days and at present all of them are operating on day ahead basis coal stock not sufficient for even one day full generation,” the Chief Minister wrote in his letter.
As per norms stocks are supposed to be maintained for at least 15 days ahead period.
Talking about Delhi’s rising power demand in the summer, Kejriwal said, “Delhi at present is reeling under severe heatwave conditions, peak demand has already crossed 6200 MW as on date and is expected to touch 7000 MW very shortly.”
He added, “As informed, this coal shortage is primarily attributable to non-availability of transportation rakes with Indian Railways due to which the available coal is not getting transported to the NCR thermal stations. With the rising temperatures and increasing power demand this coal stock position is very alarming and needs immediate attention and intervention.”
Kejriwal requested the Prime Minister to intervene personally and direct the Railways to provide rakes/wagons on a priority-basis to avoid load-shedding in Delhi.
