VISAKHAPATNAM: Taking serious note of the custodial death of 70-year-old retired government doctor K Tirupaiah, deputy inspector general of police (Visakha Range) Soumya Mishra on Monday has suspended Chodavaram circle inspector, B Venkat Rao and K Kotapadu sub-inspector B Arjun for their conduct leading to the custodial death.According to the police, Tirupaiah, a noted doctor at K Kotapadu in the district, who conducted the abortion of 28-week-old foetus being carried by a minor SC girl violating the provisions of Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act, was arrested by Chodavaram police on Saturday around 8:30 p.m. in violation of the guidelines of the National Human R i g h t s Commission (NHRC).Tirupaiah suffered a cardiac arrest on Sunday around 2 a.m. while he was being questioned in the Chodavaram Police Station. The Police shifted him to community health centre (CHC) at Chodavaram, where the medical officers declared him brought dead.Following a protest by the relatives of the victim and members of doctors’ association on the custodial death of Tirupaiah, the DIG ordered a departmental inquiry on Sunday. The inquiry, conducted by Narsipatnam ASP Tafseer Iqbal, held inspector Venkat Rao and SI Arjun responsible for the death of Tirupaiah.
