KOCHI: CPM state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan said on Tuesday that the Piravom bypoll would be a referendum on the nine-month-old Oommen Chandy Government and the outcome of the election would be truly the people’s resentment against the Government."There is no doubt that the Piravom byelection would be a referendum on the government as stated by Chandy,’’ he told reporters here. "We are confident of a comfortable win in the Piravom bypoll. The people who have elected the UDF to power are disappointed and they would make use of the democratic right in a suitable way,’’ he said.Pointing out that the UDF Government had failed on all fronts - industrial, health, education and agriculture, Vijayan said that the government had failed miserably to find a solution to the real problems. It was during the last LDF government that welfare measures were taken in the agricultural sector, he added.Charging that the development of the state had come to a grinding halt in the state, Vijayan said that the LDF government had given a new lease of life to the PSUs. He said the state government had failed miserably on the law and order front also.Earlier, the CPM mandalam committee met at Piravom and decided to entrust the charge of the election to party central committee member E P Jayarajan. The committee was attended by Thomas Isaac, M A Baby, P Rajeev, Chandran Pillai and Dinesh Moni among others. Vijayan will be in the constituency for three days and will hold discussions with various leaders. Several LDF leaders are in the constituency and the campaigning would be intensified in the coming days.
