New Delhi: Just in nick of the time for US Presidential elections, the first film on US commando raid that killed Al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden in May 2011 was premiered on the US cable channel. Titled ‘SEAL Team Six: The Raid on Osama bin Laden’, the 90 minute film was apparently watched by 2.7 million viewers just two days before the presidential elections.
Buzz has it that the film was backed by Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein who is a prominent fundraiser of Barack Obama.
Obama’s presence in the film via archive footage has raised many eyebrows considering the television premiere of the film to sway the voters. However, the director of the documentary has rubbished the rumours.
According to AFP, National Geographic channel, who telecasted the film that was shot in India and New Mexico, said that the film was its top rated show of the year. Such was the viewership of the film on television that channel’s president Howard Owens said in a statement, “If this film had been in theatres this weekend, it very likely could have been the number-one movie in America.”
Another film on hunt for Osama Bin Laden, ‘Zero Dark Thirty’ made by Kathryn Bigelow of ‘Hurt Locker’ fame, will be released in January next year.
