A homemaker named Papia Kar from Majdia in Nadia, West Bengal has made a Durga idol using over Rs 15,000 pens.

After the Ganesh Mahotsav festivities end, the Pitri Paksha will begin and will last for about 16 days. After its end, the eastern states of India will celebrate Mahalaya on the last day of Pitri Paksha, which marks the beginning of Devi Paksha. And six days later, the grand festival of Durga Puja begins. Meanwhile, the rest of the country will celebrate Navratri. This year, Navratri will begin from October 3 and Durga Puja celebrations will begin from October 9. It will culminate with Vijaya Dashami or Dussehra. As the festival is just around the corner, people are gearing up for the grand affair. One woman from Malda has made an idol of Goddess Durga at home using pens.

A homemaker named Papia Kar from Majdia in Nadia, West Bengal has made a Durga idol using over 15,000 pens. Everything from the deity’s idol to the jewellery and even the trident of the Goddess has been intricately crafted using pens and pencils. Some parts of the idol, like the lion’s mane, has been made using pencil shavings having been stuck using glue. The Trident, the Goddess’ crown, weapons and other ornaments have been fashioned from pens and pencils.

Papia Kar has mentioned that she undertook the project of making the idol nine months ago. The idea of making the idol with pens sparked after she had an epiphany that pens play a significant role in every stage of life, from birth to death. From signing birth certificates to using them for the first time in school and continuing with them in college, pens are important in any person’s life. Hence, she chose to use pens as the primary material.

The final push for the creativity was the horrific RG Kar Hospital’s rape incident. She said that the incident revealed that our world is filled with educated people who are demons. As a way to protest against it, she crafted the demon, Mahishasura, using more pens.
