CHENNAI: The Prakrit Art gallery is hosting a wonderfully diverse art exhibition featuring abstract artists from all over India. The show even featured several works by artists from in Chennai. The show was an effort to display local and upcoming artists, explains Meena Dadha, the director of the gallery.“People are running after all of the big artists for investment. I want to bring to Chennai a new idea that says to invest in upcoming artists because they are tomorrow’s artists. Choose what you like, don’t buy it for the sake of investment. If you buy something you like, it can never fail.”Although abstract and modern art often bares the brunt of most of the criticism for an obscure, pretentious or ivory tower attitude, it is an incredible medium that stands out among styles because of it’s unique use of textures to convey feelings without using a definite subject matter. Because of the breadth of the style, it is difficult to typify the genre, but this exhibition featured primarily oil paintings that provided a wonderful representation of the abstract idiom.Dadha selected the pai-ntings for a number of reasons, but she primarily looked for strong pieces of art that she felt compelled the viewer to think. She feels that art is always valuable, and great art isn’t decided by trends or popularity, but instead by the individual viewer.“Abstract means a thing that you imagine. Any abstract that forces you to think is a good abstract,” she said. “I call that a true artists whose painting talks to the person who buys. You should take a painting with which you can talk, which you can feel.”The exhibition is a great collection of Indian artists that exemplifies the style and is a true testament to the artistic talent within the country.
