New Delhi: A confusion over the platforms from which trains were to depart claimed two lives at the busy New Delhi Railway station stampede on Sunday.

The narrow foot over-bridge between platform number 12 and 13 was the scene of a deadly stampede that left many in hospital also.

“Twelve number platform train was transferred to 13. There was no space even to move, no announcements were made,” said an eyewitness.

The Railway officials admitted that platforms were changed in the last minute but blamed it on the summer rush.

Railway official Vivek Sahai said, “Around 1400 hours, the platform for Vikramshila Express had to be changed from 13 to 12. Vikramshila left 5 minutes late at 1450. There was huge rush on it but everyone was accommodated. Sapt Kranti Express backed on platform number 12 to 13. There was no problem. At the landing of foot over-bridge, some trunk fell down or somebody slipped which led to stampede.”

Railway officials say they are helpless as at this time of the year there is 3 times the rush and this is what has led to the stampede.

Meanwhile, the Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee was in Kolkata, busy with the upcoming Municipal polls. However, she has promised a high-level probe.

“Railways will take care of all the casualties. We are still not clear whether this happened due to sabotage, rumour or negligence. Whatever may be the reason, a high power committee will look into the matter,” said Banerjee

The railway officials say a new foot over-bridge at the Delhi railway station will solve the summer rush woes.

Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dixit conveyed her condolences over the incident.
