Actress-turned-politician Sri Latha Reddy, popularly known as Roja Selvamani, gained acclaim across Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam cinema. However, she ventured into Bollywood and did just one film in her entire career.
Roja dazzled in a special song in the 1994 film The Gentleman, featuring Chiranjeevi. The movie was directed by Mahesh Bhatt, with production by Allu Aravind.
The movie was an adaptation of the Tamil blockbuster Gentlemen, directed by Shankar and featuring Arjun as the lead. Chiranjeevi took on the role played by Prabhudheva, who originally danced to the tune of the song Chikku Bukku Composed by AR Rahman. While Gautami showcased her talent in the South, Roja joined Chiranjeevi for the Hindi version of the song.
Roja’s appearance in The Gentleman marked her second special song, the first being alongside Akkineni Nagarjuna in the 1993 film Rakshana. Interestingly, this Bollywood film remains her sole venture in Hindi cinema.
Beginning her Telugu film journey with the 1991 movie Prema Tapassu, Roja gained recognition through Sarpayagam, portraying Sobhan Babu’s daughter. Her breakthrough came with the Nandamuri Balakrishna starrer Bhairava Dweepam, propelling her to overnight stardom.
