Formula One star Lewis Hamilton recently talked about his retirement plans. The 39-year-old Mercedes driver is currently the second-oldest competitor on the grid following Fernando Alonso (43). Despite approaching his 40s, Hamilton has voiced that he has no intentions of retiring soon. But he would not want to continue racing if he lost interest in the sport. “Is there a time when I’m not in love with it anymore? That’s the moment that hopeful never happens, in the sense that I’ve fallen out of love with,” he told Esquire. Hamilton then added, “But I will know when I need to stop.”

Speaking further Hamilton touched upon how he would consider retiring with the feeling that he could have raced for a few more years. Expressing his wish to get the maximum out of his career, Hamilton said, “I want to make sure I really max it out while I can and fully enjoy this sport I’ve done my whole life.” He also added how other racers had warned him against finishing his career early. “There are so many people that have finished their careers early, and I’ve spoken to many who’ve said they wish they could have just done one more year or two. And they’re like, ‘Stay in as long as you can!’” he said.

Hamilton also discussed his plans on how he would approach improving his longevity in the sport. “I do have mentally a plan of where I would like to extend to…I’ve just got to strategise and sequence things. I’m very much about sequencing, like looking at brands that I collaborate with, companies that I’m essentially starting, how I manage my time between all those, and how I’m able to dedicate myself to this job still,” the 39-year-old said.

Hamilton did not have the best of years in 2022 and 2023. But the Mercedes driver has seemingly sprung to life this year. He has won two of the last three races. He overcame Red Bull’s Max Verstappen to win the British Grand Prix. After finishing third in Hungary, Hamilton notched another crown in the Belgian Grand Prix.
