Days after getting appointed as India’s T20I captain for the upcoming Sri Lanka tour, Suryakumar Yadav thanked fans and supporters for the showering love and support. The ace Indian batter took to his social media accounts and said the role brings a lot of responsibility, excitement and enthusiasm during the series against Sri Lanka.
The selectors opted for Suryakumar Yadav, one of the best batters in the shortest format of the game in the world, as captain for the T20I series ahead of Hardik Pandya, who has led the side previously and was the vice-captain of the team in the T20 World Cup 2024. Rohit Sharma will lead the side in the ODIs with Shubman Gill being vice-captain of both squads.
“Thank you so much for outpouring love, support, and best wishes from you. Last few weeks have been nothing short of a dream and I am truly grateful. Playing for the country is the most special feeling that I will never be able to describe in words,” said Surya in his post on Instagram.
“This new role brings with it, a lot of responsibility, excitement and enthusiasm. I hope to keep receiving your support and blessings.
“All fame reaches God, God is great,” he added.

While Hardik Pandya seemed to be primed to get the T20I captaincy after Rohit’s retirement, Gautam Gambhir has shown faith in SKY, who led India in seven matches in Pandya’s absence in 2023. Gambhir had previously been vocal about SKY’s leadership qualities when both were in Kolkata Knight Riders and this elevation surely seems to have Gambhir written all over it.
Gill, on the other hand, has been elevated to India’s vice-captain. He recently captained India in the Zimbabwe T20Is, but it was widely speculated that with the likes of Pant, and Pandya returning in T20Is and Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul back in ODIs, Gill had little chance to be the vice-captain, but the management believed in Gill and put the young star in the leadership group.
