The BCCI have announced that Avesh Khan will replace the injured Mohammed Shami ahead of the second Test at Cape Town against South Africa.

The BCCI has officially announced that Avesh Khan will be added to India’s squad ahead of the second Test against South Africa in Cape Town. Avesh would be the replacement for the experienced Mohammed Shami who is out due to injury.

India suffered a massive defeat against South Africa as Rohit Sharma’s side was dominated with both bat and ball. KL Rahul had scored a valiant century in the first innings to put India at 245 in the first innings. Dean Elgar however, managed to score 185 which propelled South Africa to score 408 runs at the end of the first innings.

In the ongoing 2nd unofficial Test between South Africa A and India A, Khan put in an impressive performance claiming 5/54 in the first innings to help India A wrap up South Africa A for 263.

India was poor in terms of their bowling display as it was just Jasprit Bumrah who was able to ask questions of the Proteas batters. Former Indian coach, Ravi Shastri also commented that the side missed the presence of the experienced pacer, Mohammed Shami who was ruled out due to injury and failed to clear BCCI’s medical Tests ahead of the two-match series.

Avesh Khan who has 38 first-class games under his belt has picked up 149 wickets in his first-class career so far where he represents Madhya Pradesh. He was also the leading wicket-taker during the 2018-19 season where he picked up 35 wickets in just seven games.

Other than Shami, India also missed Ravindra Jadeja who had picked up a back spasm ahead of the first Test to add to the injury woes. Shardul Thakur was included in his place but failed to impress having given away 101 runs with the ball and failing to create much of an impact with the bat as well.

India’s squad for 2nd Test: Rohit Sharma (C), Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wk), Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Mohd. Siraj, Mukesh Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah (VC), Prasidh Krishna, KS Bharat (wk), Abhimanyu Easwaran, Avesh Khan
