Israel-Hamas War: Gaza Death Toll Surpasses Grim Mark of '24,000'
Gaza reports 132 dead, 252 wounded in Israeli bombardment. Death toll reaches 24,100 in ongoing conflict

Gaza’s Health Ministry said Monday that the bodies of 132 people killed in Israeli bombardment have been brought to the enclave’s hospitals in the past 24 hours, according to The Associated Press. 33 of those were killed in Israeli airstrikes on Gaza City, said Gaza’s Civil Defense group.

Hospitals also received 252 wounded, the ministry in the Hamas-ruled territory said in its daily briefing. The fatalities brought the death toll in the strip to 24,100 dead since the war began on October 7, the ministry said, adding that over 60,834 others were wounded. The ministry says two-thirds of those killed in the war were women and children. Israel says it has killed roughly 8,000 militants in the war.

Israeli forces bombarded targets in the south, north and centre of Gaza on Monday ahead of an expected announcement by Hamas on the fate of three Israelis held hostage by the Palestinian militant group shown in a video clip at the weekend.

The three hostages are among some 240 seized by Islamist Hamas militants during a surprise cross-border rampage into southern Israel on Oct. 7. Israel’s military has said it will devote months of more targeted operations against the leaders and positions of Hamas in the south after an initial all-out offensive centred on clearing the heavily built-up northern end of the Strip.

Almost two million displaced people are sheltering in tents and other temporary accommodation amidst fighting in the south, with the tiny territory menaced by starvation and disease due to chronic shortages of food, fuel and medicines. Meanwhile, United Nations agencies renewed their appeal on Monday for a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza.
