Donald Trump took a swipe at Joe Biden during a public rally on Saturday, citing the US President’s G7 appearance in Italy, where Biden was seen seemingly drifting away from a gathering of world leaders during a skydiving demonstration.
A video of the US President separating from other G7 leaders sparked widespread scrutiny, as critics argued he appeared aloof on the world stage. Trump, who turned 78 on Friday, has made questioning whether the 81-year-old Biden is up for a second term a centerpeice of his campaign. However, online critics quickly seized on his Saturday night gaffe.
‘He had no idea’
An alternative cut of the video showed Biden walking away to engage with individuals outside the frame. During a skydiving demonstration in Italy, Biden briefly stepped away from the group to acknowledge a parachutist nearby, while Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni redirected him back to the gathering.
During a speech at a convention of Turning Point Action in Detroit, Trump said, “They are landing in a parachute, he (Joe Biden) turns around not to watch the guy landing but to watch a tree behind him. And the new and very respected leader of Italy, I don’t know who that was, a woman came up to him, and spun him around. He had no idea where he was.”

‘Meander In Chief’
A section of US media seized upon the video as evidence of Biden’s purported mental decline, labeling him as “Meander In Chief” and accusing him of embarrassing the United States. The White House countered, highlighting selective editing by critics to portray Biden negatively. Despite explanations, critics continued to frame the incident as indicative of Biden’s age-related challenges.
The Biden campaign issued a statement dismissing the clip as misleadingly cropped and accusing those disseminating it as “tampering with the video to make up lies.” This episode adds to a narrative where Biden’s occasional gaffes and public speaking struggles have faced heightened scrutiny, fueling debates about his fitness for office. Trump, three years Biden’s junior, has himself faced criticisms for factual inaccuracies and disjointed speeches.

On Saturday night, Trump suggested Biden “should have to take a cognitive test,” only to confuse who administered the test to him in the next sentence. The former president referred to Texas Republican Rep. Ronny Jackson, who was the White House physician for part of his presidency, as “Ronny Johnson.” The moment came as Trump was questioning Biden’s mental acuity. “He doesn’t even know what the word ‘inflation’ means. I think he should take a cognitive test like I did,” the former US president said of Biden during a speech in Detroit.
