Easiest Way to Lace Dunks Loosely

Loose Lacing Dunks

Push each end of the shoelace through the bottom eyelets. With the toe of your shoe facing you, lace the left end of the shoelace through the bottom left eyelet from the outside to the inside. Then, lace the right end of the shoelace through the bottom right eyelet from the outside to the inside. Match both ends of the shoelace and gently pull so you have an even length of lace on each side of the shoe. Make sure the laced section of the shoelace is not twisted.

Lace the left shoelace through the next eyelet on the right side. Hold the left shoelace and cross it over to the right side of the shoe. Thread it through the second eyelet from the bottom on the right from the outside to the inside. Loop the shoelace over your finger before threading it through the eyelet to help you keep from pulling the lace too tight. If you pull your lacings too tight, you won’t be able to slip your shoes on and off as easily. Take your time so you can make sure your lace stays flat. If your lace becomes twisted, take a moment to straighten it before moving on.

Repeat with the right shoelace. Cross the right shoelace and thread through the second eyelet from the bottom, pulling from the outside to the inside.

Repeat steps 2 and 3 until you reach the tongue loop. If you would like to lace through the tongue loop, pass the laces through the loop as you are crossing to the opposite side. By lacing through the tongue loop, you prevent the tongue from falling into the shoe when you aren’t wearing it. Lacing the tongue loop is optional. Some feel lacing the tongue loop ruins the even look of the lacing.

Continue crossing and lacing from the outside to the inside. Each time you thread the shoelace through an eyelet, stop to check that the lace is flat and not twisted.

Lace the top eyelets from the inside out. When you reach the top eyelet on each side, instead of looping over your finger and lacing from the outside, push the end of the lace through the inside of the eyelet. Repeat on the other side. When you lace the final eyelet, you should only have an inch or two of shoelace on each side. If the excess lace is longer than a couple of inches, you can loosen the lacing of the shoe by carefully pulling the excess shoelace back into the lacing pattern of the shoe. This will make your shoes fit more loosely on your feet.

Alternate Loose Lacing Option After threading the bottom eyelets, lace shoelaces through the inside of the eyelets until you reach the tongue loops. Then, reverse the pattern, lacing the eyelets from the outside in. Continue in the new pattern until you reach the top eyelets on each side of the shoe. Then lace the left shoelace through the inside of the top right eyelet. Only pull 1 to 2 inches of shoelace through the to the outside of the shoe. Repeat with the right shoelace, pushing only a couple of inches through the inside of the top left eyelet. Try to keep each lace even with the other. Loop the excess shoelace over the tongue of the shoe. You should have two loops of extra shoelace between the top two eyelets. Tuck these into the shoe by looping over the tongue and tucking along the top of your foot.

Bar Lacing Dunks

Insert the shoelace into the bottom eyelets of your shoe. Point the toe toward you and work from the bottom up. Keeping the shoelace on the outside of the shoe, push each end through the bottom eyelets, moving from the outside in. Pull on the ends of the shoelaces until they are an even length. This is your first bar.

Lace the shoelace through the third set of eyelets to create the second bar. Holding the left shoelace, run it along the underside of the shoe’s upper to the second empty eyelet on the same side. You will skip the eyelet directly above the first bar and lace through the third eyelet from the bottom on the left side. Pull the lace across the shoe and push it through the third eyelet on the right from the outside in. This is your second bar, but it’s in the third set of eyelets from the bottom of the shoe.

Lace the shoelace through the second set of eyelets to create the third bar. Holding the left shoelace, push it up through the underside of the eyelet directly above it on the same side of the shoe. Cross the lace to the right side of the shoe and thread it through the outside of the second eyelet. Pull it through, leaving a little slack to keep the lacing loose. You now have three bars total.

Continue lacing the shoelaces through parallel sets of eyelets. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until you reach the eyelets at the top of the shoe. Skip an eyelet each time the one above it has already been laced, and push the shoelace from the inside to the outside of the eyelet. When you pull a lace across the shoe, thread it through the parallel eyelet from the outside in. Both shoelaces should end up on the inside of the shoe after you lace them through the last available eyelets.

Tuck the excess shoelaces under the shoe’s tongue. The shoe laces should lay along the top of your foot. If that’s not comfortable, you can also tuck them along the sides.

Lattice (or Diamond) Lacing Dunks

Thread your shoelace into the bottom eyelets of your shoe. Point the toe toward you and work from the bottom up. Push one end of the shoelace through the outside of the left bottom eyelet and then through the underside of the right bottom eyelet. Pull until each side is even. The shoelace should run straight across the bottom of the shoe with the ends coming out through the bottom eyelets.

Cross the ends of the shoelace. Skip 1 set of parallel eyelets and then thread each end of the shoelace into the third eyelet from the bottom from the outside in. Your laces should look like an X.

Weave through the skipped row of eyelets. Thread the left shoelace into the empty eyelet directly below it from the inside out. Repeat using the right shoelace.

Thread the shoelaces through the next empty set of eyelets. Cross the left shoelace over to the right side. Lace it through the right eyelet that’s fourth from the bottom, moving from the outside in. Repeat on the opposite side with the right shoelace. Your laces should now be in a double criss-cross pattern.

Push the left shoelace through the eyelet directly below it. You’ve already laced this eyelet, but there should be room to thread the shoelace through again from the inside out. Repeat on the other side. You have laced the third eyelet from the bottom twice.

Continue the pattern. Repeat steps 4 and 5 until you have double-laced the third, fourth, and fifth sets of eyelets from the bottom. Do not lace through the tongue loop.

Thread the laces through the top eyelets. Cross the left shoelace over the shoe and push it into the top right eyelet. Make sure you lace it from the outside in. Repeat with the right shoelace, crossing over to the right top eyelet. Tuck the ends inside your shoes.

Zig-Zag Lacing Dunks

Lace one end of your shoelace through the outside of the bottom right eyelet. Then push it through the inside of the bottom left eyelet. Pull the shoelace until both sides are even.

Push the left end of the shoelace through the outside of the next eyelet. Pull the lace so you have a loop from the bottom left eyelet to the one directly above it. Make sure the lace is flat. Leave just enough slack that you can lace a shoelace through the loop you just made.

Thread the same end of the shoelace through the inside of the parallel eyelet. You should now have a bar running from the inside of the left eyelet to the inside of the right eyelet, second from the bottom.

Repeat steps 2 & 3 with the same lace on the right side of the shoe. You should now be lacing into the third eyelet from the bottom on the right side of the shoe. Continue to repeat steps 2 & 3 alternating sides. When you reach the top eyelet on the right side of the shoe, repeat step 2. Tuck the excess shoelace inside the shoe.

Pick up the unworked shoelace hanging from the bottom right eyelet. Cross it over to the loop you made between the bottom left eyelet and the eyelet directly above. Lace the shoelace through the loop from the inside. Pull it through so the shoelace is taut but not tight.

Repeat crossing the shoelace over the shoe and threading it through the loops. You should end up lacing the shoelace through the top loop on the right side of the shoe. After you pull the shoelace taut, cross over the shoe and push the end through the top eyelet on the left side. Make sure you lace the eyelet from the outside so the excess shoelace hangs to the inside of the shoe.
