'Grumpy Old Men': Indian American Prez Candidate Nikki Haley Targets Trump, Biden
Nikki Haley targets Trump and Biden's age in political ads, framing them as 'Grumpy Old Men' for 2024 race. Explore her strategy and the age factor

Indian American presidential candidate Nikki Haley has launched an ad campaign with age-related tropes against her GOP rival Donald Trump, and Democratic incumbent Joe Biden.

The former South Carolina governor released several political ads attacking both Trump and Biden, both of whom are above 75. The ads, focusing on their age, are part of Haley’s explicit strategy to stand out and secure a nomination for the presidency, according to US media reports.

Haley, who served as UN ambassador under Trump, also posted an image on X, that shows a modified version of the movie poster of the 1993 comedy Grumpy Old Men. The 51-year-old replaced the actors’ faces with those of Biden and Trump. “The rematch nobody wants…” she wrote against the image.

Make America Normal Again

On Tuesday, she coined a new slogan, “Make America Normal Again,” as her campaign enters the critical phase ahead of the GOP’s South Carolina Primary on February 23. “Our campaign has been flooded with notes and emails from folks across the country who want to make America normal again. They know that we can do better than two 80-year-old names from the past,” Haley said as her team launched an aggressive campaign in her home state of South Carolina.

Haley is trailing by more than 30 points against former president Donald Trump in her home state where the Republican presidential primary is scheduled. The two-term governor is confident of making a strong showing in the South Carolina primary and then moving to Super Tuesday states in March. “From California to North Carolina, from grandmothers to young parents, these Americans are tired of Joe Biden and Donald Trump’s never-ending chaos and confusion. They don’t want another Trump-Biden rematch,” her campaign said Tuesday.

Intensifying its attack on Haley, the Trump campaign this week accused her of being a warmonger. “The fact is that Haley knows she doesn’t have a cogent argument or even a coherent reason for why she should be President. But what voters do know is that she’s a warmonger who would rather throw America into endless wars,” Steven Cheung, Trump spokesperson, said.

“Her bloodthirst is only rivalled by her dependency for Democrats to interfere in the Republican primary,” Cheung said in a strongly worded statement on Tuesday. Trump has won the first two GOP primaries in Iowa and New Hampshire. However, Haley’s popularity is gradually picking up in her home state, where she hopes to make a strong showing.
