Beijing: Chinese President Xi Jinping has made an exception by agreeing to meet External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Monday. The Chinese President rarely meets foreign ministers and will break the protocol by meeting Swaraj.
The visiting foreign ministers are usually granted an audience with the the country's premier.
Swaraj, arrived in Beijing on Saturday for a four-day visit and is laying the groundwork for the Prime Minsiter Narendr Modi's maiden visit to China which will take place in May.
The trip comes just days after US President Barack Obama's unprecedented second visit to India. China had criticised both Obama and Modi over their joint statements calling for "freedom of navigation and overflight throughout the region, especially in the South China Sea".
Meanwhile Swaraj held bilateral talks with her Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi. The ministers discussed regional and global issues concerning both the nations.
