In an amusing post on X, Bhavish Aggarwal, the co-founder of Ola Cabs and the founder of Ola Electric, shared a photo that showed a ‘Diabetes Reversal Center’ called ‘sugar. fit” built over a Dunkin’ Donuts franchise in Bengaluru. This photo indirectly indicates how many people who might have developed or aggravated diabetes by consuming fried sweets like donuts will end up seeking treatment at similar diabetes control health centres. While sharing this image, Aggarwal wrote, “The real circular economy”. This post has so far gathered over 2.4 lakh views and thousands of likes since it was shared on December 27, 2023.
The real circular economy ???????? pic.twitter.com/vO0IOaOASW— Bhavish Aggarwal (@bhash) December 27, 2023
As per the Oxford Dictionary, the circular economy is “an economic system based on the reuse and regeneration of materials or products, especially as a means of continuing production in a sustainable or environmentally friendly way.” In general parlance, circular economy is a sustainable twist on consumption as it relies on sharing, reusing, and repairing. However, it appears that Aggarwal understands it as an economy in which one enterprise creates business opportunities for other companies.
Commenting on Aggarwal’s post, an X user sarcastically referred to the slew of complaints regarding the malfunctioning of Ola electric scooters and wrote, “Like ola and insurance”. An X user referred to one such strange placement of shops in their city and remarked, “We have this in our city, anytime fitness gym in one building full of cafes around it.” Another person wondered if some companies strategically located their stores next to each other as he shared a photo that showed a sports and gym wear brand Decathlon outlet near a Cult.fit gym. He wrote, “Is this marketing strategy, Opening cult fit gym above the Decathlon showroom? Location- Brigade Road, Bangalore.”
This seems like a plausible theory as in recent years many businesses have started sharing their space with complimentary stores. For instance, bookstore Barnes & Noble has partnered with coffee chain Starbucks in many of their outlets. This alliance allows bookshopers to enjoy a cup of coffee as they read a book. Such alliances encourage people to spend and turn out profitable for both businesses.
