For many of us, college hostel food was synonymous with limited choices and constant concerns about hygiene. Recently, an internet sensation brought this issue to the forefront when a hostel resident, Suganth, shared a harrowing experience with his hostel food. In the now-deleted video, Suganth was served a South Indian delicacy – Sambhar Vada with coconut chutney. The clip showed him squeezing the sambhar-soaked vada, but instead of sambhar, excessive oil dripped out of it. The overlay text on the video read, “Hostel food,” accompanied with a woozy face emoticon.
The caption alongside the video read, “My Hostel Vadai…” However, the video has now been deleted by the user.
Before its deletion, the video went viral on the internet, garnering more than 37 million views, according to reports. It had also ignited a storm of reactions from the social media users in the comments section.
According to NDTV, a user commented, “Same problem with my company’s food,” while another quipped, “Dangerous food in the world.”
“Continue like this for 1 month taking oil out of wada then boom you will have an oil factory in your room and can give rations also,” an individual jokingly commented.
Some users humorously pointed out the health conditions with one stating, “99 missed calls from a heart attack.”
Another witty comment read, “Cholesterol: I’m coming.” A person quipped, “There is some vada in your oil.”
Many were surprised by the quantity of the oil, with one user exclaiming, “I can cook kg chicken with that oil.” Another added, “What is this, it seems you can make 5 dosa using oil to come from that Vada.”
The tales of hostel food woes seem to have no end. Just last year, a shocking incident took place at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Bhubaneshwar. An individual named Aaraynsh shared a distressing image on social media platform X (Formerly Twitter) – a dead frog discovered in the hostel food. In the caption, he highlighted that parents pay approximately Rs 17.5 lakhs to get their child an engineering degree, yet this was the quality of food being served in the college hostel. “Then we wonder why students from India migrate to other countries for better education and facilities,” he added. The post had sparked a wave of anger and disbelief among people on social media.
