'Don't Just Blindly Follow Trends': Ghazal Alagh Warns Against Using Korean Skincare Products on LinkedIn
Ghazal Alagh, co-founder of beauty brand Mamaearth took to LinkedIn to warn Indians to not blindly follow the Korean skincare routine.

There has been a major rise in demand for Korean skincare products across the world including India. The K-beauty trend has become the new go-to for skincare. Recently, Ghazal Alagh, co-founder of beauty brand Mamaearth took to LinkedIn and warned Indians to not blindly follow Korean skincare routines as they may not be ideal for the Indian climate. She mentioned that Indians must use skincare products that are suited for Indian skin.

In the viral post, she asks a question, “Does Korean skincare work for Indian skin?" She answers, “No." She further explains the reason why Korean skincare products are not suitable for Indian skin. In the caption of the post, she wrote, “I bet you’ve heard of or even used Korean skincare products. But did you know their formulations might not be the right fit for you?" She said, “While the products can be a part of your skincare routine, they should not form your complete skincare routine."

She shared two key ways in which Korean skin is different from Indian skin. The first factor is the melanin content, “Koreans have low melanin content in their skin, and hence they don’t go through problems like tanning, pigmentation, uneven skin tone, and dark spots, which we Indians have. Our skin is rich in melanin content." The second factor is climate differences, “They mostly have cold and dry weather, and hence they can layer 8-12-step skincare. For us, it might not work. In our hot and humid climate, as we sweat, a 12-step skincare routine will lead to clogging of pores which can lead to acne."

Ghazal Alagh shared that Indian skin concerns are different from Koreans and hence, people in India need skincare products that cater to their specific skin concerns, and not just hydration. She wrote, “It means that not only are our skin concerns different, but so are the solutions. We need formulas that have ingredients that just don’t give us hydration, but also solve our skin concerns. Korean skincare can be a valuable addition, however, relying solely on the “K-Beauty" trend might not be the best approach."

Alagh also shared three things one should do instead, “Know your skin type and concerns. Choose products that work on your skincare concerns. Embrace your Desi skin, and opt for products that are crafted for your Indian skin and needs." She concluded her post with a message, “Don’t just blindly follow trends! Tailor your skincare routine to your unique needs and our Desi climate."

Understanding our skin’s unique needs is key to a healthy skincare routine," commented a user. “Thanks for sharing these details and creating awareness among users. Very much necessary to use products suitable to your skin type and not get carried away by trends," added a second. “Understanding the unique needs of our skin based on our environment, climate, and melanin levels is crucial for effective skincare. Embracing personalized routines that address our specific concerns with holistic formulations is key to achieving healthy and radiant skin," wrote a third.
