Why Was Popatlal’s Wedding Cancelled In Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah
TMKOC’s Popatlal and Madhubala called off their wedding in the show after Dr Hathi revealed they both are Thalassemia minor carriers.

Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah’s latest episode saw Popatlal’s impending marriage with Madhubala being called off. The Golden Crow Award-winning reporter in the show was about to get married after a long wait of nearly 15 years. Despite the love and deep connection, Popatlal and Madhubala had to abandon the wedding. Reason? The major health complications, as revealed by Dr Hathi, in an episode. As the plot twist left fans disheartened, producer Asit Kumar Modi requested the audiences to look at the awareness that the team intended to create around Thalassemia.

Popatlal and Madhubala called off their wedding with a heavy heart after Dr Hathi revealed that they both are Thalassemia minor carriers. The particular genetic disorder poses risks if two carriers marry each other. Explaining further about the medical complication, Dr Hathi noted that their children would have a 25% chance of inheriting Thalassemia major, which is a severe condition demanding lifelong medical intervention.

Speaking on the fans’ disappointment due to the plot twist, Asit Kumar Modi told ETimes TV, “I understand that the audience is disappointed that Popatlal did not get married. But I would like to ask them to look at the bigger picture. Through this episode, we aimed to deliver a strong message to society. I believe that conveying the message of Thalassemia was more important than Popatlal’s wedding. His marriage can happen in another episode but this crucial message about Thalassemia needs to be shared.”

“We wanted to use the popularity of Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah to create awareness. I found it very noble to spread awareness in this way. I believe people will appreciate our efforts and love the storyline, understanding that through entertainment and comedy, we are delivering an important message,” added Asit Modi, assuring fans of Popatlal’s wedding at the right time.

In the same conversation, Asit Kumar Modi also explained that sustaining a show for 16 years and that too, without a single leap, was challenging. Adding that he is fighting through all the challenges, the producer noted that he will continue to work hard to entertain the audience.

Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah has been running on television for around 16 years now. Premiered in 2008, the show continues to attract audiences for its humorous plot and talented cast. One of the longest-running television series in India, the show is also digitally available to watch on Sony LIV.
