Twitter finally introduces autoplay videos
With the latest feature enabled, native videos, Vines, and GIFs will begin to play back automatically and unmute once you tap on them.

New Delhi: Following the footsteps of Facebook, microblogging site Twitter has also introduced the autoplay feature for videos shared on its platform.

The autoplay feature for videos will now save you multiple taps to play a video on Twitter. With the latest feature enabled, native videos, Vines, and GIFs will begin to play back automatically and unmute once you tap on them. If you turn the video to landscape mode, the sound will turn on and the video will expand to fit the screen.

In its blog, Twitter explains that users still have a choice of whether they want to enable the autoplay feature or revert to the older click-to-play experience. You can tweak the settings based on your requirement. For example, you can choose to have videos autoplay only when you are connected to WiFi, or have click-to-play videos when you have low bandwidth on your device.

When Facebook introduced the feature back in 2013, it allowed videos to play on mute in a user’s News Feed and only when the user clicked on it, the sound was turned on.

A report on Wall Street Journal notes that the autoplay feature on Twitter could give the company a boost in its revenue. With Facebook’s successful example, Twitter could leverage this opportunity to woo advertisers and attain some profit.

Putting to rest advertisers’ concern that only about half of the video ads across the web are actually viewable, Twitter has assured that it will charge advertisers only after 100 per cent of the video has been in view for at least three seconds.

With CEO Dick Costolo’s impromptu announcement of stepping down from his role at the 140-character-based social network and Jack Dorsey taking up the interim role, it would be interesting to watch if Twitter’s latest addition to its site proves financially beneficial to the company.

The autoplay feature on Twitter is currently available for its iOS app and the web version; while the Android version is expected to follow soon.
