New Delhi: Chef Ranveer Brar, who co-judged the fourth season of MasterChef India, appears to be the most tech savvy of all the celebrities who have so far been featured in our nascent Star Tech series. He not only uses a wide range of gadgets, but also holds a deep understanding of the technology and intricacies of the devices he uses.
Ranveer, who owns multiple devices in each of the popular product categories, has three laptops, two phones, and three video game consoles. Talking about his laptops, Ranveer says, "My MacBook Pro is the one I like to travel with and I use it only for video edits. I upgraded its RAM to 8 GB, and therefore, I do all my FCP-related work on it."
Ranveer admits that he has "some fascination for Dell" and his other two laptops are Dell-branded - the Dell XPS and the Dell Inspiron. He says the XPS is too heavy to be carried along, but durable at the same time, and therefore, he uses it at his home. The Inspiron, however, is used more by his wife. He also has a Dell projector that he uses to project movies onto what he says is the only white wall in his house.
His love for phones is evident from the fact that he has changed 30 phones in 17 years with the first being a brick-sized Motorola in 1998. Ranveer, currently, owns a Samsung Galaxy S5 and an iPhone 6. While the Galaxy S5 is his primary phone, he uses the iPhone 6 for mobile photography and to connect with users on social networks.
This "visual and sound guy" says he is very particular about his home theatre system. He currently has a Polk Audio system, and is planning to soon upgrade to a new one. "There is an old company Cambridge SoundWorks. I don't know it still exists or not. I will check and would like to buy my next home theatre system from them. And if it doesn't, I wouldn't mind grabbing a second-hand model.," says Ranveer. He is a also big fan of Bose and has a portable Bose sound dock.
The gamer in Ranveer couldn't discourage him from buying video game consoles from the three top-dogs in the industry. He has a Nintendo Wii, Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony PS3. "I do 70 per cent of my gaming on Xbox, but, at times, you need a Blu-Ray picture quality and that is when I switch to PS3," says Ranveer, whose favourite game is Assassin's Creed.
"The most important thing I like about Xbox is networking. I have had a lot of Xbox gamer friends for 8 years now. These guys stick to Microsoft."
He uses Wii to play classics. he says, "There is a sense of nostalgia attached to it. The Wii was one of the first consoles to come with motion sensors and that's why whenever I have to play games that include motion gaming, I prefer the Wii. And that's why my Microsoft Kinect comes to use very rarely," he elaborates.
Recalling the years that have gone past, Ranveer shares with us his memories of the times when his favourite gadget was a DVD scraper that would clear off the scratches from the DVDs.
The apps he uses the most are Instagram, Zomato, photo-editing app Cymera, Google Maps, Tweetcast. Ranveer says he is not a frequent WhatsApp user and has started to like Flipboard. He also owns a Canon EOS 5D Mark III camera and an iMac.
Ending the interview with a piece of advice for his fans, Ranveer says, "Wait for at least three months to buy a new gadget. The prices are likely to go down."
