New Delhi: Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray on Thursday became one of the few people to be paid obituary reference in Parliament despite never being a member of either the Lok Sabha or the Rajya Sabha. The Shiv Sena and the BJP had strongly pitched for an obituary reference to Thackeray in Parliament.
The others who were paid obituary reference on Thursday in Parliament were former or current members of the Lok Sabha or the Rajya Sabha.

Rajya Sabha chairmnan Hamid Ansari in his obituary reference described Bal Thackeray as a charismatic person who always tried to inculcate a sense of pride in people particularly those from Maharashtra. "Beginning his career as a cartoonist with The Free Press Journal, Thackeray founded the Shiv Sena party in 1996 to espouse the cause of local people of Maharashtra," Hamid said remembering the Shiv Sena chief.
Bal Thackeray, who breathed his last on Saturday at the age of 86, was cremated with state honours at Shivaji Park in Mumbai on Sunday. His funeral was the first at a public space in Mumbai since independence. Before Independence, freedom fighter Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak had been cremated at the famous Girgaum Chowpatty in south Mumbai on August 1, 1920. The ashes of Bal Thackeray will be immersed in Godavari on Friday.####
