New Delhi: Under-fire Indian Hockey Fedaration Chief K P S Gill on Monday brushed aside demands for his resignation in the wake of India's failure to qualify for the Olympics. But he admitted that it was a setback for the game.
"I will respond to these things at a later stage. We do not have an instant coffee machine that you can get results instantly. It takes time to regain your position. We have put the process in place and the results will take some time", he told PTI in reaction to demands for his stepping down.
Political reactions are pouring in response to this debacle.
Reacting to the incident MoS (HRD) M A A Fatmi said, “This is one of the most unfortunate days. There was one time when hockey was the number one game in the country and people were interested in it. Even in my old days we used to watch each and every game. KPS Gill has buried the game alive.”
While CPI MP Gurudas Dasgupta said, “KPS Gill should not resign, he should be kicked out.”
However, the IHF chief said he would have discussions with the chief coach Joaquim Carvalho and the other support staff to find out the exact reasons for the debacle before making any statements.
"It is not proper to respond at this stage. We will wait for the team to return first, then we will have a clear idea what went wrong", Gill said.
Asked whether the IHF had accepted chief coach Carvalho's resignation, he quipped "I cannot respond to media reports".
Indian hockey plunged to a new low after the men's team failed to qualify for the Olympics for the first time ever following the 0-2 defeat against Britain in the final of he qualifying tournament in Santiago, Chile.
