I'm a human, not a machine: Munde
Munde said he was busy arranging for blood for Mahajan's surgery when the police expected him to record a statement.

New Delhi: Senior BJP leader Gopinath Munde admitted that he had omitted some points while recording his statement with police in the murder case of BJP leader Pramod Mahajan.

Munde, the brother-in-law of Mahajan, defended himself in the court for not recording his statement on the day of the murder by saying it was not possible to do so while he was trying to collect blood for the late politician's emergency surgery.

Answering the defense counsel's queries at the court, Munde said, "I am not a machine. I am a human being."

He said he could not record the statement since he had to take Mahajan to the hospital on April 22, 2006 after his younger brother Pravin shot him. The doctors at the hospital had asked to arrange 19 bottles of blood for Mahajan’s surgery, Munde added.

Munde identified Pravin in the court and denied that all his relatives had ganged up against Pravin. He also revealed he never told police about his knowledge of Pravin's alleged "threatening" SMS to Mahajan or that Mahajan had called him after receiving it.

Munde replied in the negative when asked if the "motive" for the murder—a demand for money—was decided on by the relatives after the beginning of the trial.

Pradya, Munde's wife and Pramod and Pravin's sister, told the court about the sequence of incidents on April 22. She said Mahajan's wife Rekha had rung her doorbell in the morning. She was crying loudly and told Pradya that "the scoundrel had shot Pramod".

Pradya and Rekha then rushed up to Mahajan and wiped sweat from his forehead. She asked Rekha to get a "dupatta" to tie around his wounds to stem the bleeding.

During questioning, Pradya sternly reminded the prosecution and defence teams that she felt equally for both her brothers and she would be fair and just in answering every question.

She also identified the vest worn by Mahajan at the time of the incident and the dupatta that was tied around his injuries. Pradya said she was not shown these clothes when her statement was being recorded and that she was seeing them in the court today for the first time after the day of the incident.
