Haryana Minister does a 'Sholay's Gabbar' to warn about sex determination test
Anil Vij said declining sex ratio is a matter of concern for Haryana and the state government is committed to improve it.

Chandigarh: Haryana Health Minister Anil Vij on Monday donned the hat of Sholay's iconic character Gabbar Singh to drive home his point on illegal sex determination, saying he wanted to create a situation where doctors would chase away those who approach them for such purposes.

"Mein aise halaat paida karna chahata hoon ki door door tak jab koyee ultrasound centre jayee to doctor kahein bhaag ja naheen toh Anil Vij aa jayaga (I want to create such a situation that if anyone approaches the ultrasound centre for illegal sex determination test the doctor asks to run away or else Anil Vij will come)," Vij posted this message on Twitter.

Haryana is infamous for its skewed gender ratio. Notably, the Union government's ambitious 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao' campaign to improve the child sex ratio was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Panipat in January this year.

When asked if he had taken a cue from film Sholay to warn those indulging in illegal sex determination test, Vij said, "you can say so. I was speaking at a function of a school in Ambala today. These lines (tweeted by him) suddenly struck me while I was delivering speech there and talking about Beti Bachao and Beti Padhao initiative of the BJP government".

Meanwhile, Vij said declining sex ratio is a matter of concern for Haryana and the state government is committed to improve it.

"In this direction, it has been decided to give a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh to the person giving information about sex determination cases and those indulging in carrying out female foeticide," the minister said.
