Bhubaneswar: Former Odisha law minister Raghunath Mohanty, accused in a dowry case, has gone absconding. He and his family members are facing charges of dowry and torture after a complaint filed by his daughter in law.
Mohanty has not been seen in public since he resigned 10 days ago. The State Human Rights Protection Cell has said it has been unable to trace the former minister.
The Opposition Congress and BJP have alleged that Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik is delaying Mohanty's arrest. They protested outside the Chief Minister's office on Monday morning.
Raghunath's anticipatory bail had been rejected by the Odisha High Court last week. A dowry case was filed against Raghunath Mohanty by his daughter-in-law Barsha Sony Mohanty. In her complaint at the Balasore police station, she alleged that she was physically and mentally abused by her in-laws for dowry a few days after her marriage in June 2012. She alleged that her in-laws demanded Rs 25 lakh and a Scorpio car from her family.
