Kolkata: Congress leader Digvijaya Singh on Sunday termed the rape of a five-year-old girl in Delhi as a "dastardly act" and slammed BJP for "playing politics" over the brutal incident. "Collective effort is required to uproot such social evils. Thus, law enforcing agencies, civil society and others will have to get together, apply their mind and bring out a solution," Singh told reporters during a private visit to the city.
"If there is a 300 per cent increase in child sex abuse cases in last two years, this is a matter of concern for everybody. So, everybody has to introspect what could be the reasons behind this increase," he said. "We strongly condemn all such incidents. Unfortunately, some political parties are politicising this ghastly act," Singh said. Referring to the demand of BJP leader Sushma Swaraj that death penalty should be given to those guilty of raping minor girls or indulging in brutal rapes, Singh said, "BJP is again playing to the gallery. I think this is something that has to be taken seriously."
Swaraj, who visited the victim on Saturday, had demanded that a law be passed in this regard. Singh, however, claimed the government is taking appropriate action and the whole picture should be looked at before arriving at any conclusion. He maintained that one should bear in mind that the police-population ratio in India is one of the lowest in the world. "Population has increased but number of policemen have not increased. Hence, instead of playing politics we need to see things in totality," Singh said.
