Charges against me are false: Kurien to Rajya Sabha MPs
Ahead of the Budget Session, the government has given clear signals of backing Kurien, whose resignation has been sought by Left parties.

New Delhi: Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman PJ Kurien on Wednesday wrote to members of the House saying the charges of rape against him were false. He wrote to the Rajya Sabha MPs on the eve of the Budget Session of Parliament.

Since Kurien's name figured in the 17-year-old Suryanelli gangrape case, many political parties have been seeking his resignation. The Congress MP, however, has time and again claimed innocence and rejected the demand for his resignation.

Ahead of the session, the government has given clear signals of backing Kurien, whose resignation has been sought by Left parties. "Kurien's case is very clear. It has been cleared by the Supreme Court...We will not agree to hold a discussion in any House of Parliament on a subject of state politics," Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kamal Nath has said.

Troubles increased for Kurien after one of the absconding convicts in the Suryanelli gangrape case told a Malayalam TV channel that Kurien was with him when they went to the guest house where the girl was kept in confinement and raped. He also claimed that he was asked by the investigators not to reveal Kurien's name during interrogation. Kurien, however, has denied all the allegations.
