A day after Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed's death, the focus will be on the political developments in the state. Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had on Thursday unanimously decided that Mehbooba Mufti will take over as the J&K CM.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislature party will be meeting on Friday to deciding on extending support to Mehbooba Mufti as next Chief Minister. According to sources, BJP General Secretary Ram Madhav will visit Srinagar on Friday to ensure smooth transistion of power in the state. Ram Madhav, who was in Jalgaon on Thursday had to rush back to Delhi after the latest development.
BJP has said that it will go with ally PDP's choice for the post of the Chief Minister. "It is for PDP to decide who will be their leader," BJP vice president and its Jammu and Kashmir in-charge Avinash Rai Khanna said when asked about his party's stand on Mehbooba succeeding her father.
"Our alliance is with PDP," Rai added, indicating it was the senior ally's prerogative to choose the leader for the top job.
The decision was made hours after CM Mufti Mohammad Sayeed died on Thursday at Delhi's All India Medical Institute of Medical Sciences. The 79-year-old was suffering from sepsis, low blood counts and pneumonia.
56-year-old Mehbooba, who is the PDP's president, has had her share of detractors in the saffron ranks for several reasons, including her passionate espousal of her party's 'self-rule' concept, which used to be dubbed "as soft separatism" by many in the BJP.
