All eyes on development package for the state as PM Modi reaches Jammu and Kashmir
The PM is expected announce a development package worth Rs 70,000 crore to 1 lakh crore for Jammu and Kashmir for the next five years.

Jammu: With promises of a massive financial aid in his bag, Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Jammu on Friday for a day-long visit. Modi was received by Governor NN Vohra, Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and senior Cabinet ministers at the airport.

The Prime Minister is attending the birth centenary functions of senior Congress leader late Girdhari Lal Dogra. Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, who is married to Dogra's daughter, also arrived on Thursday for the centenary functions.

Modi is attending the main function inside the Zorawar Singh auditorium of Jammu University around which a thick blanket of security has been thrown. Senior Congress leader and former chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and Congress veteran Karan Singh are also attending the function.

All eyes are on this visit as the PM is expected announce a development package worth Rs 70,000 crore to 1 lakh crore for Jammu and Kashmir for the next five years.

J&K is proposed to get Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and an All India Institute Of Medical Science like institute. The funds allotted by the Central government are to be used for roadways, education, health, power, renewable energy, urban renewal and tourism projects.

The package will also budget for relief and rehabilitation of flood affected people of valley. The fund is also proposed to be used for development of smart cities like New Srinagar and New Jammu.

Financial aid to the tune of Rs 70,000 crore to 1 lakh crore will be the biggest central assistance given to Jammu and Kashmir. This package will be double the amount of Rs 35000 crore given by the previous United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government.

Modi is scheduled to fly back to New Delhi in the afternoon.
