Schools will remian closed today in Delhi, Noida as well as in Telangana on the occasion of Guru Nanak Jayanti

A holiday has been declared for schools in Delhi and Noida today, November 27 due to Guru Nanak Jayanti. The Telangana government too has declared a holiday for the schools, colleges, and all educational institutes on the occasion. Apart from schools, banks and several offices are also closed today.

Guru Nanak Jayanti marks the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, who is the revered founder of Sikhism. Also known as ‘Gurpurab’, the day is observed to celebrate the Sikh Guru. He was born on the full moon day of the Kartik month in the Nanakshahi calendar, which corresponds to November in the Gregorian calendar. On the auspicious occasion of Guru Nanak Jayanti, devotees visit Gurdwaras and take out processions, known as ‘Nagars Kirtan’. During the processions, devotees sing hymns and carry the Sikh holy book, the Guru Granth Sahib, through the streets. It serves as a reminder of Guru Nanak’s teachings and their relevance in today’s modern world.

Meanwhile, apart from today, state-run schools in Telangana are also expected to stay closed on November 29 and 30. However, an official announcement is yet to be made regarding the same. A formal statement is expected to be issued in accordance with the Election Commission’s orders. The school closure is likely to be announced due to a large number of teachers engaging in election activities.

Furthermore, teachers participating in election duties in Telangana have been instructed to report by 7 AM on November 29 for the preparation and handling of EVM machines. On the day preceding the polling, teachers are expected to arrive at the designated schools, which will serve as polling centres for the Assembly elections in the state. Since teachers will be participating in election duties, the education department is contemplating a two-day holiday for government schools. However, it is expected that the teachers will be granted leave on December 1, the day following the polling.
