Actress and doctor Trinetra Haldar Gummaraju was honoured with the Youth Icon of the Year award (Jury) at the CNN-News18 ‘Indian of the Year’ (IOTY) awards. The 13th edition of India’s premier television award was held on January 10, 2024, to recognise exceptional contributions of remarkable individuals across seven categories – Business, Entertainment, Sports, Youth Icon, Rising Sports Star, Social Change, and Climate Warriors.

Gummaraju received the award from retired Supreme Court judge Justice Indu Malhotra.

“Despite having started my career with medicine, I believe society needs healing, it really does. And one incredible way of doing that is through entertainment. So I decided, let’s give it a shot," Gummaraju said on receiving the award, adding that it was a good thing that this healing was also happening towards the treatment of the LGBTQ+ community in the entertainment industry.

Trinetra Haldar Gummaraju is one of India’s first trans content creators who documented her transition on social media sites, including Instagram and YouTube. A doctor, an actor, and a Forbes India 30 Under 30 alumnus, she strives to create awareness around gender, sexuality, mental health, queerphobia, and challenges faced by the LGBTQIA+ community.

She made her acting debut with the second season of the web series, Made In Heaven. She played the role of Meher Chaudhry in the show.

Other nominees in the category were Indo-Canadian singer and rapper AP Dhillon, influencer Kusha Kapila, podcaster and influencer Ranveer Allahbadia, and composer-singer Anirudh Ravichander.

While Gummaraju won in the Youth Icon (Jury) category, Ravichander received the Youth Icon award in the popular category.

Currently in its 13th edition, CNN-News18 Indian of the Year is an initiative that recognises Indians who have made significant contributions to various fields and have had a profound impact on the nation. Since its inception in 2006, CNN-News18 Indian of the Year has firmly positioned itself as the biggest awards in the world of news television, celebrated for its unassailable credibility.

Over the years, the Indian of the Year award recipients have included personalities such as Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Olympic gold medallist Neeraj Chopra, cricket star Virat Kohli, the Indian women’s cricket team, NGO Stop Acid Attacks, Chess Grandmaster Vishwanathan Anand, music legend AR Rahman, former PM Manmohan Singh, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Nobel laureate Kailash Satyarthi, star boxer MC Mary Kom, actress Deepika Padukone and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, among others.
