A day after Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia announced that his government aims to host the 2048 Olympic Games, Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president Narinder Batra on Wednesday said that Kejriwal should have discussed the matter with IOA first. “It’s a welcome step if they’re thinking of it but at the same time, Arvind Kejriwal should have been in discussion with IOA first. They can send an expression of interest but bidding is a very different process. I will say it’s a welcome move but Delhi alone can’t stage the Olympics. Multiple cities have to be involved, there are many things involved behind any competition,” Batra told ANI.
On Tuesday, while presenting the city’s budget for 2021-22, Sisodia said, “There is another big dream related to sports which I am placing before this house… It is a dream to organise the Olympic Games in Delhi.”
Later in the day, it was confirmed by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal himself that Delhi will bid for the 2048 Olympic Games.
“A vision has been provided in the Budget (Delhi Budget) that 2048 Olympic games should be held in Delhi. Delhi will bid for the 2048 Olympics. We will take up whatever infrastructure and other necessities that are needed to be created for it,” he said.
However, Batra feels that India can definitely host the Olympics before 2048. “One more thing I feel that before 2048 we will certainly have one Olympics in India.”
In my point of view, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Complex in Motera is the best option for opening and closing ceremony of Olympics as of now,” he further added.
Earlier this month, Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju had pitched for hosting the Summer Olympics in the future, saying the Olympic movement is not complete till India hosts an edition of the quadrennial sporting extravaganza.
“The Olympic movement is not complete till India hosts an Olympic Games. We are taking this very seriously,” the Minister said during his keynote address during a virtual conference organised by the Conference of Indian Industry.
