The objective of the exchange program is to provide an opportunity for the tribal youth of the selected states and districts to visit different places to understand the cultural ethos, language and lifestyles of people.
The Tribal Youth Exchange Program is in line with the Narendra Modi government’s focus on the welfare of tribal communities. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has said that the development of the tribal communities is the priority of the government.
Amit Shah is a frequent participant at gatherings that commemorate tribal leaders and presides over the initiation of programs and schemes meant to benefit tribal communities. This includes his participation in the Tribal Youth Exchange Program and the inauguration of the National Tribal Research Institute in the national capital.
In the last nine years, the government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is implementing several development schemes on a large scale in the tribal areas and the funding for such schemes has significantly risen over the years.
What is the Tribal Youth Exchange Programme?

The programme provides an opportunity to the tribal youth of 30 selected districts from 7 states for exposure visit to 10 different places of the country to understand the cultural ethos, language, lifestyles of the people and understand the unity in diversity aspect of our national life.
The focus of the programme is to expose tribal youth to various developmental activities, skill development, educational, employment opportunities and technological and industrial advancement in different states.
The exchange programme sensitizes the tribal youth about their rich traditional and cultural heritage and help them to develop emotional linkages with their peer groups in other part of the country.
As a part of the program, the participants get a chance to meet eminent personalities like the President of India, the Prime Minister, Chief Ministers, Governor and other VIPs.
Modi Govt’s Tribal Outreach
The Narendra Modi government has undertaken a range of initiatives in the last nine years to develop tribal human resources with a special focus on education, health, and livelihood generation.
Amit Shah earlier this month informed that the government is spending Rs 1.19 lakh crore for tribal welfare as compared to Rs 24,000 crore during the previous government.
At a conference in August this year, Shah reportedly told police officers to adopt a more “conciliatory” approach to tribal issues. “The Minister stated that tribals comprise around 9% of the population and [said that] while handling their issues, police should be conciliatory,” the Union Minister said, according to The Hindu.
With a focus on the tribal population, the government has also introduced several schemes including Pradhan Mantri Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups Development Mission and PM Vishwakarma Yojana for the holistic development of the community.
The government in 2019 also established Eklavya Model Residential Schools in every block with 50 percent or more Scheduled Tribes population and at least 20,000 tribal persons as per the 2011 census.
It is also working to develop over 36,000 villages across the country with at least 50 percent tribal population and 500 STs as model tribal villages under the Pradhan Mantri Adi Adarsh Gram Yojna to ensure that basic amenities reach tribal villages.
