James Gunn Refutes Superman: Legacy's $300 Million Budget Rumours: 'Absolutely Not'
One of DCU's most-awaited films, Superman: Legacy, will go on floors in the coming days with the first part of the script already locked.

One of DCU’s highly awaited films, Superman: Legacy, has created a lot of excitement among superhero lovers. Looking forward to bringing some of the iconic superheroes back to the screen, the film is expected to have a new take on the Superman story. Scheduled for theatrical release next year, Superman: Legacy is no doubt one of the most ambitious and anticipated projects by the revamped DC Universe. As fans enthusiastically await every possible update about the film, director James Gunn recently clarified a rumour about the film’s budget.

A report recently suggested that DCU’s Superman: Legacy is being made on a mammoth budget of $364 million, making it the second-most expensive superhero film after Avengers: Age of Ultron. While fans were still trying to digest the fact, the director has now refuted the rumours on social media.

In response to a Threads post, Gunn wrote, “Absolutely not. How in the world do they think they know what our budget is?”

This comes at a time when the film’s cast recently took part in the movie’s first official table read. This seemingly gave a glimpse of the new ‘S’ logo, which will be shown in the film. The shield looks like it is inspired by the Kingdom Come logo and will be a part of the new costume.

However, Gunn is yet to confirm or deny the news.

What we know so far about Superman: Legacy

As per latest reports, the latest DC film will tell the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. Last year, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav said, “We got James Gunn and Peter (Safran) working very hard on DC, which is going to be a very big growth driver for this company,” as reported by Hollywood Reporter.

While the script’s first draft is said to be complete, the shooting is expected to commence in the coming days. While David Corenswet will be seen playing Clark Kent aka Superman, others like Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern Guy Gardner, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho will play prominent roles.

Most recently, Sara Sampaio was roped in to play Lex’s assistant/lover Eve Teschmacher, and Skyler Gisondo to portray Jimmy Olsen. Superman: Legacy is scheduled to be released in theaters on 11 July 2025.
