When Namrata Shirodkar Revealed Mahesh Babu Wanted A 'Non-working Wife': 'Even If I Was Working In Office...'

Actor Namrata Shirodkar had once opened up on the conditions she and her husband, Mahesh Babu, set before getting married. Famous for her roles in hits like Vaastav, Pukar and Kachche Dhaage, Namrata tied the knot with the Telugu heartthrob in 2005 and made the bold move to leave the spotlight because Mahesh wanted a wife who wasn’t working.

In a candid chat with celebrity journalist Prema, Namrata had once revealed that even if she hadn’t been an actress, Mahesh would have still asked her to quit her job, because the superstar wanted a ‘non-working wife’. “Mahesh was very clear that he wanted a non-working wife. Even if I was working in some office, he would have told me to leave work. There are certain things we had for each other,” she had said.

In the same interview, Namrata Shirodkar shared that she asked Mahesh Babu to live in an apartment with her in Hyderabad before moving into his bungalow. She explained that she wasn’t used to living in big houses and felt scared. “We were very clear that we will live in an apartment first after marriage because I was from Mumbai, and I didn’t know how I would fit into these huge bungalows. I used to get scared so he moved into an apartment with me. That was my condition that if I’m going to come to Hyderabad, I will live in an apartment,” she had said.

Namrata Shirodkar and Mahesh Babu’s love story is like a fairy tale come to life. They first met in 2000 while filming Vamsi, and although sparks flew immediately, they kept their feelings secret at first. As they spent more time together, their relationship deepened and they made it public by 2004​. Namrata, who was crowned Miss India in 1993 and had a successful Bollywood career, decided to step away from the spotlight after marrying Mahesh in 2005. Their wedding was an intimate ceremony in Mumbai, steeped in traditional Telugu customs.

Namrata Shirodkar and Mahesh Babu welcomed their first child, Gautham, in 2006, followed by their daughter, Sitara, in 2012.
