Vikram Recalls Almost Losing His Leg After Horrifying Accident: 'Had 23 Surgeries; Was Told Can't Walk'
Tamil actor Chiyaan Vikram opened up about a horrifying accident that almost stole his ability to walk.

Tamil actor Chiyaan Vikram revealed doctors declared he will not be able to walk after he had a horrifying accident. The actor, in a new interview, revealed he met with a life-threatening accident when he was in college. The doctors had recommended that he gets his leg amputated due to the injury. However, the doctors of another hospital that he was shifted to saved his leg. Despite saving his leg, the doctors said he won’t be able to walk. After 23 surgeries and years of bed rest, exercise and determination, Vikram finally walked on his own.

Speaking with The Ranveer Show, Vikram recalled he was returning from IIT Chennai after performing a play when he met with an accident. “It was a bad accident. They took me to the hospital and they wanted to amputate my leg, it was that bad. If I would have had a cut, blood would have come out. Because there was no cut, my bones had broken. My leg swelled up and the pulse stopped (in the leg). This results in gangrene, I still have gangrene. They didn’t know what to do at the Government hospital. They said let’s amputate his leg or he’s going to die.”

However, his mother did not want him to lose his leg. He was shifted to a private hospital where the doctors managed to save his leg. However, he was told he will never be able to walk again. “I was in bed for three years. I had 23 surgeries, I had infection, one year on crunches. I didn’t walk for four years and this was last year of college. I had pins (on my leg) and it was crazy,” he said.

Vikram added that his mother was devastated to learn that he cannot walk anymore. However, Vikram was determined he wanted to be an actor and to be an actor, he knew he had to walk and even run. “In my mind, I wanted to be an actor so badly, I said I will walk, I won’t just walk, I will run. I used to go swimming, I had my crunches and worked at it. Then it came down to one crunch and then I used to have a walking stick, and I couldn’t even walk. I couldn’t bend my leg because the operation was done after five months and my knee had stiffened,” he said.

“How do you act in a movie if you can’t bend your leg? I had gone through all of that. But I had decided I am going to walk, I am going to act,” he said. “Somehow I got into a film, landed a serial, landed in a movie, then another movie but none of my movies were a hit. The maximum audience were 20-25 people. And that was for 10 years before Sethu happened. The doctor saw my after five years and asked, ‘Hey, you’re walking? You’re not supposed to walk!’ He was shocked. Which is why I relish every character, frame and every movie of mine because I think of everything as a blessing,” Vikram said.

The 58-year-old actor added that he still cannot do a lot of things. This includes bending the knee, dancing and squating. But he keeps himself up and going otherwise. Vikram was recently seen in Thangalaan.
