Ever found yourself glued to your seat long after the credits roll post a film, hoping for a little sneak peek into what lies beyond? Well, this time, you don’t have to wait past the credit roll while watching Madame Web. In contemporary films, post-credits scenes have evolved into a distinctive feature of their own, commonly added to the conclusion of major film releases across various studios and franchises. However, the upcoming film Madame Web stands out as a major departure from this trend, reportedly opting to not include any additional scenes once the credits roll.
Lorenzo di Bonaventura, the producer of Madame Web, revealed that this choice was not a deliberate deviation from the norm but rather a decision born out of the narrative of the film.
“It wasn’t a conscious decision to say ‘We’re not going going to do that since everybody else does it,’ but we really liked having the ambiguity of it and having the promise of it that stood hand to hand where that other piece would then solidify it in a certain direction,” Di Bonaventura explained to ComicBook.com.
Moreover, in the same interview, the producer also talked about why Madame Web remains distinct from other Spider-Man-related properties. Di Bonaventura said that the intention was to focus solely on Madame Web’s character arc and not intertwine it with other narrative threads.
“We made a decision early on that the advantage in this story was not to attach it to all these other stories,” Bonaventura adds. “We tip the hat. But really, we wanted to concentrate on a character journey, and I think some of the superhero fatigue that people talk about is because those movies are often not about the central character,” he said.
He further elaborated to Comicbook, “And so we felt it was a stronger choice for us to say, ‘This is Madame Web’s story.’ She comes out of the Spider-Man comic books, but it’s not part of this other giant thing. It is its own standalone, which gives the freedom to really tell the character story.”
Joining the lead Dakota Johnson in Madame Web are actress Sydney Sweeney as Julia Carpenter/Spider-Woman, Isabela Merced as Anya Corazon/Spider-Woman, and Celeste O’Connor as Mattie Franklin/Spider-Woman. The ensemble cast of Madame Web also features Tahar Rahim as Ezekiel Sims, with Mike Epps, Emma Roberts, Adam Scott, and Zosia Mamet in undisclosed roles.
Madame Web is scheduled to hit theaters tomorrow, February 14, 2024.
