Machine Gun Kelly Recalls Conversation With Daughter That Sparked His Sobriety Journey
Machine Gun Kelly recently shared the motivation behind embarking on his sobriety journey at the People’s Choice Country Awards.

American singer and rapper Machine Gun Kelly (MGK), born Colson Baker, recently talked about his sobriety journey at the People’s Choice Country Awards. The 34-year-old was both a nominee and a performer at the event, which took place at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville on September 26. During his conversation with People right before the ceremony, the rapper highlighted that changing his perspective was the starting point of his journey to being sober.

“I had to zoom out and take a look at myself from a holistic perspective. I was born on the 22nd. Twenty-two is a master number. What am I here to master? I had to ask myself that question,” said MGK. He further shared that he took a step back to retrospect about his “generational curses” and the “problems that were passed down” to him. The Lonely Road singer said that he found the answers to his questions by knowing that it was his job to be the “good man”.

He continued, “I find solace in knowing that I can, you know, punish myself today so that I can forgive myself tomorrow. I have a daughter who I love with all of my heart and would die for. And I have a beautiful family and a beautiful group of friends, and a beautiful life to live for. And I’m not in a haze anymore to not realise that.” Last night, at the People’s Choice Country Awards, MGK closed the ceremony with a performance of his single Lonely Road. He also took home Best Crossover Song of 2024 for the same, featuring Jelly Roll.

Previously, MGK shared that his 15-year-old daughter helped him make the decision to get over his addiction. “It started with my daughter saying, ‘Dad, you know I can tell when you’re high?’ It broke my heart. It was the ultimate letdown,” said the rapper during his appearance on the Million Dollaz Worth of Game podcast. He revealed that his daughter was just 11 or 12 when this incident happened. “It took me a while afterwards because, obviously, drugs have a vice grip on you. That was step one for me. As a father and as a man, to be the father I wish my dad would have been, I have to break this generational curse for my kid,” added MGK.

Meanwhile, on Dumb Blonde podcast, he also credited his girlfriend Megan Fox for “being extremely helpful” during his sobriety journey.
