Cinematographer Gangu Ramsay Of The Ramsay Brothers Passes Away At 83
An official statement from Gangu Ramsay's family informed that the veteran cinematographer breathed his last at the age of 83.

Gangu Ramsay, a prominent cinematographer-filmmaker from the renowned Ramsay Brothers, recognized for their cult horror classics like Purani Haveli and Tehkhana, passed away at a hospital early on Sunday morning, as confirmed by his family. He was 83 years old. The family mentioned that Gangu Ramsay had been struggling with health concerns over the past month.

In an official statement, the family announced the sad demise of Gangu Ramsay, the accomplished cinematographer, filmmaker, and producer, who was the second eldest son of F.U. Ramsay. He breathed his last at 8 am after battling health issues for the past month, while receiving treatment at Kokilaben Hospital. Gangu Ramsay is survived by his daughter Geeta Ramsay and son Chander Ramsay.

The family conducted the final rites at Oshiwara Crematorium at 2 pm on the same day. Under the Ramsay Brothers banner, Gangu Ramsay contributed his creative expertise to more than 50 iconic films, including titles like Veerana, Purana Mandir, Bandh Darwaza, Do Gaz Zameen Ke Neeche, and Khoj featuring Rishi Kapoor.

Ramsay Brothers became synonymous with the horror genre, producing a series of B-grade films during the 1970s and 1980s featuring zombies, vampires, werewolves, reanimated corpses, and snowmen. Their movies gained wide popularity for blending horror with elements of erotica.

The book ‘In A Cult of Their Own: Bollywood Beyond Box Office’ by Amborish Roy choudhury highlights that the 1972 horror film ‘Do Gaz Zameen Ke Neeche’ was pivotal in launching Ramsay Brothers and the Indian horror film industry.

In the filmmaking setup, the responsibilities were divided among the seven brothers – Kumar Ramsay wrote scripts, Kiran Ramsay was in charge of sound, Gangu Ramsay handled cinematography, Keshu Ramsay assisted in cinematography and production, Arjun Ramsay managed post-production and editing, and Tulsi Ramsay along with Shyam Ramsay directed the films.

Gangu Ramsay also worked as a cinematographer on Aashiq Awara, one of Saif Ali Khan’s early films, and collaborated with Akshay Kumar on several Khiladi movies including Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi, Sabse Bada Khiladi, and Mr. and Mrs. Khiladi as well as with veteran Kannada actor Vishnuvardhan. Additionally, Gangu Ramsay made contributions to television with shows like The Zee Horror Show, Saturday Suspense, X Zone and Nagin to his credit.
