Before their successful comeback with Gadar 2 and Animal, brothers Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol worked on Poster Boys during a tough time in their careers. Actor Shreyas Talpade, who directed the film, remembered approaching Sunny and Bobby during this period. In an interview, he mentioned that Bobby was struggling and hadn’t worked for four years. Shreyas shared that during their first meeting, Bobby wasn’t feeling great and they mostly just chatted because of his low spirits.
During a chat with Siddharth Kannan, Shreyas said, “Yes, that was a time when Bobby, especially, was at an all-time low. He hadn’t worked for four years. And I remember when I first went to meet him for a narration, we just chit-chatted, because he wasn’t in that frame of mind… He was very low. ‘Maine kaam nahi kiya, mujhe confidence nahi hai, kya karun (I haven’t worked in a while, I don’t have the confidence, I don’t know what to do),’ he said. So, we didn’t do the narration. Next day, I went again, and got through the first half. And then I returned the day after that and finished the second half.”
Later, Shreyas noticed Bobby had changed. He asked Bobby for a reading session at 11, promising it would be just the two of them. Bobby arrived on time, surprising Shreyas by shaving his messy beard. “I said, ‘Now I see my Bobby Deol!’,” remembered Shreyas. He added that both brothers were very dedicated during filming. Talking about Sunny, Shreyas said, “We’d heard stories about Sunny paaji, that the schedules would go on forever, but it was nothing like that. We finished the film in 30 days. His work was for 26 days. We had a 7 am shift, he’d show up at 6:30, get ready in five minutes, and we’d be shooting on time.”
In 2023, the Deols truly stole the show. Dharmendra wowed as a romantic hero in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. Sunny Deol’s Gadar 2 rocked the box office, while Bobby Deol impressed in Animal. Despite their usual privacy, the Deols were out and about, seen at Sunny’s success bash for Gadar 2 and a special screening hosted by Esha Deol.
In fact, on an episode of The Great Indian Kapil Show, Sunny and Bobby Deol shared heartwarming anecdotes about the past year. Sunny reflected on what a great year it has been for their family, leaving Bobby emotional. He said, “1960 se limelight mein hai oar kayee saal ho gaye koshish kar rahe the par somehow kuch cheezein ho nahi rahi thi. Mere bete ki shaadi huyi, uske baad Gadar ayi, uske pehle papa ki film ayi. Kuch yakeen nahi ho raha tha ke Rab kitho aa gaya! Uske baad Animal ayi, phatte hee chak de.
