Phalsa, also known as Indian Sherbet Berry, has the botanical name Grewia Asiatica. Widely used in the preparation of sherbets, phalsa is rich in vitamins and ample amounts of trace minerals and is easily digestible. Ayurvedic physician Dr Umesh Sharma told Local 18 that phalsa comprises cooling and many medicinal properties. It is a powerhouse of many nutrients and is also rich in vitamin C. In addition to this, this exotic fruit is also rich in magnesium, potassium, carbohydrates and iron.
In a conversation with Local 18, a Phalsa seller from Rajasthan named Feroze Khan also shared some information regarding this fruit. He hails from Karauli, Rajasthan and sells Phalsa by wrapping it in a cloth on a cart. Feroze said that Indian Sherbet Berry is available in the market for 20 to 25 days and that too only during the summer months. According to him, this exotic fruit is said to be very beneficial for the body.
Feroze said that there is a steady supply of phalsa from Agra. According to him, apples and pomegranates are cheaper fruits compared to the Indian Sherbet Berry. The Karauli native said that the Phalsa is sold at Rs 240 per kg. He added that this exotic fruit is getting expensive every year.
