Is Salmon Sperm Facial The Next Big Thing In Skincare?
Salmon sperm facials are becoming the next big thing in skincare.

The skincare industry is always abuzz with new trends, and one that has recently garnered widespread attention is the salmon sperm facial. This innovative treatment gained attention after Jennifer Aniston shared her experience with it in an interview last year. “First of all, I said, ‘Are you serious? How do you get a salmon’s sperm?'” she had said.

Following Aniston’s lead, reality TV star Kim Kardashian also gave the concept of salmon sperm a try and discussed it in an episode of her TV show, The Kardashians. “I got a salmon sperm facial with salmon sperm injected into my face,” she said.

What are the benefits of this unusual facial and is it really worth the hype? Let’s find out.

What Is A Salmon Sperm Facial?

The salmon sperm facial uses an ingredient known as polydeoxyribonucleotides (PDRN), derived from the sperm cells of a chum of salmon or trout. This ingredient is celebrated for its potential benefits in skincare due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Dr. Sophie Shotter, an aesthetics doctor told Salon that PDRN is a “gel substance” containing DNA fragments derived from “salmon gonads.” “It is different from polynucleotides, which include a mixture of DNA and RNA and the PNs can provide a little more structural support and last a little longer,” Dr Shotter said.

According to a 2017 study in the journal Frontiers in Pharmacology, the manufacturing process of PDRN ensures that it is free from peptides that might cause allergic reactions.

Dr Shotter added that the salmon sperm is collected from the fish in a way that does not harm them. After harvesting, the sperm undergoes a thorough process of filtration, purification, and sterilization to produce a product that can be injected.

Is Salmon Sperm Facial Beneficial For Skin?

The report highlights several studies showcasing the benefits of salmon sperm facials. Research published in Pharmaceuticals in 2021 indicates that PDRN can enhance wound healing and reduce inflammation in human skin. This treatment has been well-regarded in South Korea for its skin benefits.

Another study in 2010, featured in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science, found that salmon sperm DNA can improve skin elasticity, increase collagen levels, and boost hyaluronic acid production. A 2017 study supported these findings, showing that salmon sperm DNA aids in cellular damage and inflammation reduction, suggesting its potential use in sunscreens and moisturizers.

Dr Shotter added salmon sperm is very “biocompatible” meaning it can produce noticeable skin improvements without altering the face’s natural shape or structure.
