Global Family Day is celebrated on January 1. The day aims at commencing the new year with peace, unity and brotherhood among people and across nations and cultures. Global Family Day: History
The idea to mark the day was first initiated in November 1997 after people were inspired by a book named, One Day In Peace – January 1, 2000. The book was released by the United Nations. Around the same time, the United Nations General Assembly launched the International Decade for the Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World. Later, in 1999, UN members received a formal invitation to officially mark January 1 as – Global Family Day.

Global Family Day is celebrated to unite people from walks of life. The occasion marks the union of people irrespective of their background, colour, or place of origin. Global Family Day also honours strong family ties and how they can help get over any difficulty.

Global Family Day is mainly marked in the United States. Many local groups plan events to bring families together and spread the message of peace and unity.
Interestingly, Global Family Day falls on the same day as the World Day of Peace. The latter was coined in 1967 and is marked annually by the Catholic Church.
