Youth attacks wife, tries to commit suicide

A youth attacked his wife, an engineering college student, inside her classroom in Perumon near here on Wednesday suspectedly over issues in wedlock. After attempting to slit the girl’s neck using a surgical knife, the youth tried to commit suicide by inflicting injuries in his neck and forearm.

All this heinous drama was witnessed by her classmates. Thangalakshmi, 19, of Tangasseri who was critically injured and her husband Durgadas, 22, of Mathilil are recovering at a private hospital here. She is a fifth semester Electronics and Communications student and Durgadas is a former student of the college. They had married a year ago and had lived together for sometime, before they parted ways. 

Thangalakshmi had a semester exam on the day and the incident happened before the exam. Durgadas, who was wearing the college uniform, reached her classroom and the couple entered into a heated argument. As the argument turned violent, her classmates interfered and got him outside the room. However, Durgadas in a fit of rage, reentered the class and tried to slit her throat with a sharp surgical blade.
