A 30-year-old woman landed up in the Intensive Care Unit of a hospital in Tondiarpet due to severe infection caused by a surgical napkin that found its way inside her during an earlier surgery. The napkin has since been surgically removed.

According to Mahesh (31), the husband of the Ajitha (30), doctors who conducted a Caesarian Section on her to deliver the couple’s second child in February allegedly sewed her up with the napkin inside.

Ever since the childbirth, Ajitha reportedly complained of stomach ache and constant bowel trouble for the past few months. The couple approached the same hospital where their child was delivered - Malligai Hospital in Tondiarpet - for treatment.

“However, doctors there said that it was merely indigestion and dissuaded her from seeking further treatment,” alleged a lawyer, who was assisting the family. Finally, a few days ago, Ajitha underwent scans at Vandana Hospital in the same area, where doctors are believed to have noticed the surgical swab lodged in her intestine, according to the lawyer. “They operated on her and removed that piece but said that she has to be in the ICU for two days,” he added.

Mahesh, a civil contractor, said that when they approached the hospital that ostensibly made the mistake, they initially agreed to compensate them.

However, on Monday evening, hospital emissaries lodged a complaint against Mahesh claiming that he was threatening doctors there, according to a police official at the Tondiarpet police station.

Within an hour, Mahesh and a few lawyers also lodged a complaint about the alleged medical negligence.

Police officials further said that lawyers from either party jostled around in the police station demanding action. Eventually, both complaints were accepted and were being investigated. Representatives of the hospital could not be reached for comment.
