A riot of colours was seen at the Agarwal Vidyalaya School at Vepery on Tuesday morning, as their inter-school fest Varnajalam (band of colours) started off. Students from several schools from across the city turned up in large numbers to participate in the various events.
Inaugurating the event, Dr R Abhirama Sundari, assistant professor in music at the Queen Mary’s College, said that cultural events played an integral part in sharpening young minds. “Participating in these events helps make you a better, more well-rounded person. Your abilities come to the forefront and by doing that, you become more confident,” she said while addressing the students.
The two-day fest has on-stage events like prop dance, dumb charades, adzap, classical music, Tamil and Hindi oratorical, channel surfing and adapt tune. Off-stage events include card designing, collage, pot painting, jewellery making, cooking without fire, mehendi designing, trace paper drawing, recitation from the Bhagavad Gita, salad preparation, Pandora’s box, T shirt painting, flower arrangement, spelling bee and rangoli. The unique aspect of this culturals is that the host school will not be participating in any of the events. Also, each student from the other schools will be allowed to participate in only one of the events, thereby giving an opportunity for more students to take part.
Apart from individual awards, the prize up for grabs for the school winning most points is the Shri Brijlal Chowdhry Rolling Cup.
The class XI students of the host school presented a few dances. Enthusiastic applause, whistles and hoots gave an idea of how the two activity-filled days would be.
